ORLANDO, Fla. -- Eight-time major champion and 2014 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Tom Watson will join host Martin Hall for a special episode of Golf Channel Academy, Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET on Golf Channel.
Reflecting on some of the most memorable moments that helped establish his Hall-of-Fame career, Watson will demonstrate the keys to developing a strong skillset and mindset on the golf course. The episode will examine a collection of Watson’s most outstanding shots from a storied career, including a look at the unforgettable hole-out for birdie on the 17th hole at Pebble Beach in the 1982 U.S. Open. Watson and Hall also will discuss the necessary tools to creating the ideal golf swing, and highlight the fundamentals for developing an excellent touch around the green.
During the hour-long episode, Watson also will recall his time spent with his first swing instructor, Stan Thirsk, at Kansas City Country Club as a young golfer trying to mimic the swing of Jack Nicklaus, and will share his unique perspective on some of the game’s most successful players, including lessons learned from Byron Nelson and Sam Snead. The episode was filmed at Loch Lloyd, a course designed by Watson in his native Kansas City, Mo.
Setting the table for Tuesday’s special episode of Golf Channel Academy, Golf Channel will air the 1977 Open Championship installment of Golf’s Greatest Rounds – the unforgettable ‘Duel in the Sun’ between Watson and Nicklaus – at 8 p.m. ET leading into the network premiere of Watson’s Golf Channel Academy at 10 p.m. ET. Golf Channel’s Steve Sands and Frank Nobilo will take viewers through one of the game’s most storied major championship rounds, featuring commentary from Watson on memorable moments from the round. The original world feed of the tournament will be featured with lead commentator Peter Alliss joined by three-time Open Championship winner Henry Cotton providing play-by-play of the homestretch at Turnberry on that fateful Sunday.
