Fifth Annual Medinah Patriot Day in Illinois a sell-out success

MEDINAH, Ill. -- The Fifth Annual Medinah Patriot Day has seen continued growth since its inception in 2011, and is sold out again for foursomes and single player spots. The fundraiser benefits the Illinois Patriot Education Fund (IPEF) whose mission is to provide educational financial assistance to support Illinois military families. A wonderful day of celebrity appearances, golf, a silent auction, Chicago Police Department bag pipes, lunch ceremony, and dinner reception are planned for the May 27 event at Medinah Country Club, site of five major championships and the 2012 Ryder Cup.

Unlike other worthy veteran-related charities, IPEF is an Illinois-specific philanthropic effort. All donations are distributed to assist local families, ensuring that Illinois citizens may support their neighbors who have sacrificed so much. Since 2011, IPEF has successfully funded over 60 scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $10,000, and provided more than 44,000 backpacks to deserving military children. Particular focus is given to veterans injured during service to their country and to the dependents of those who lost their lives in active duty.

"I am truly thankful to all of our sponsors, golfers, and Chicago personalities who continue to support the IPEF," said Mark Slaby, founder of Illinois Patriot Education Fund. "We are thrilled that playing spots have sold out again. It's never happened this quickly before. I feel that this speaks volumes as to how our fundraiser has grown and how our community has rallied to support Illinois military families."

The 2014 Medinah Patriot Day is dedicated to the memory of Col. Tom Nettling (Ret.), Slaby's father-in-law whose inspiration was instrumental in the founding of IPEF. Nettling was a highly decorated Vietnam veteran who dedicated countless hours to efforts supporting military families.

IPEF is proud to announce that legendary Chicago radio personality Steve Cochran, current morning host on WGN 720 AM Chicago, will be returning as master of ceremonies and play in the event. Also, Jim Cornelison, full-time national anthem singer for the Chicago Blackhawks, will be an honorary chairman and perform the national anthem during the opening ceremonies. Both Cochran and Cornelison have contributed to the event since 2011. Jarrett Payton, host of the "Jarrett, Harry and Spike" show on WGN 87.7 FM, and other local sports notables will also be participating in the event.

AON Corporation is returning this year as title sponsor and sponsor of the 'Million Dollar Shoot-Out,' and for the second year, Clear Channel Outdoor has donated space on nearly a dozen digital billboards throughout the Chicagoland area to promote Medinah Patriot Day. Notable local businesses who continue to lend support to IPEF include Legacy Marketing, Moet Hennessy, Perillo Auto Group, Tour Edge Golf, Afternath, Inc., Avaya, Maron Electric, Wheaton Academy, Hewlett-Packard, and USG. This year's event has added Home Depot to its list of partners who have all generously donated their time, money, and products to the success of the 2014 fundraiser.

Medinah Patriot Day will include a full schedule of activities, including an 18-hole golf tournament, opening ceremonies featuring special guests and presentation of scholarships, silent auction, cocktail reception, dinner and the return of the popular AON Million Dollar Shootout. Although foursomes are sold out for 2014, those who wish to secure a priority spot for the 2015 event may do so now. The 2015 event will include play on the highly anticipated 'Course No. 1', set to open later this summer following the completion of a total renovation by famed architect Tom Doak. Tickets for this year's luncheon, which include the Opening Ceremonies, silent auction and keynote speakers, are still available by going online to www.medinahpatriotday.com.

Media are welcome to cover the event and should contact Lisa Gunggoll at lisa@lg-pr.com for credential requests. The event is actively seeking corporate sponsors and volunteers.
