PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- Ted O'Rourke, who knows what it takes to win a National Championship, is a proud supporter of the format of this year's inaugural PGA McGladrey Team Championship, the first grassroots net best-ball amateur Championship managed by The PGA of America. In fact, O'Rourke, the PGA District 2 Director and PGA head professional at Morris County Golf Club in Convent Station, N.J., will host one of 41 Section Championships at his facility.
Conducted in 31 states nationwide, the Section Championships will run from May 15-Aug. 28, 2007, and are the second leg of the PGA McGladrey Team Championship.
PGA McGladrey Team Championship
Local Qualifying Events are being conducted through June 2007, with amateur registration continuing at www.PGA.com/teamchampionship. The National Championship will be held at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort, Sept. 10-12, 2007.
"I like the concept of this new Championship," said O'Rourke, who captured the 1981 PGA Assistant Professional Championship when he was a 26-year-old assistant living in Hanover, Mass. "Our members will enjoy playing in a Championship where you use your own ball. This will really take hold first in the Local Qualifying Events and grow in enthusiasm as we go through to the Section Championship and National Championship. I know I really enjoyed the concept of the Assistant National Championship when I played. You could meet everyone from the other Sections and develop good friendships. I think it is nice to see 41 Section Championships determining who will go to Pinehurst."
The PGA McGladrey Team Championship is managed and operated by The PGA of America. PGA Professionals will compete for a combined purse of $20,000, at the Section Championship level; and $200,000, at the National Championship.
In addition, PGA Professionals will receive a portion of the registration fees for hosting Local Qualifying Events and four MSR credits. Competition is open to golfers of all ages and playing abilities.
The National Championship field will compete on three of Pinehurst's premier layouts, opening at Pinehurst No. 8, which hosted the 1997 and 1998 PGA Professional National Championship. The field concludes by playing the final two rounds on Pinehurst No. 6 and Pinehurst No. 2, which has served as the site of some of golf's historic Championships, including the 1936 PGA Championship, 1951 Ryder Cup, and the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open.
The PGA McGladrey Team Championship is a result of a new partnership between The PGA and RSM McGladrey, the Official Accounting, Tax and Business Consulting firm of The PGA of America. RSM McGladrey is the fifth largest accounting, tax and business consulting firm in the country, when considered with McGladrey & Pullen LLP (a partner-owned CPA firm).
The Local Qualifying Event will use the best one net ball of the three amateur players. Each amateur receives 50 percent of their handicap allowance from the course and tees being played. Each player's score must be used on a minimum of three holes.
The Section Championships and National Championship will feature the host PGA Professional, who will complete each winning team's foursome, as they use the two best net balls of each hole, with each amateur receiving 50 percent of their USGA index handicap.
