Miguel Angel Jimenez to join 2014 Open de Espana at PGA Catalunya Resort

GIRONA, Spain -- Miguel Ángel Jiménez, one of the great icons of Spanish golf who finished fourth at The 2014 Masters in Augusta, U.S., will join the field of contenders for The 2014 Open de España, being held at PGA Catalunya Resort, near Barcelona, from May 15-18.
 


Known among his peers and fellow professionals as 'The Mechanic' for his love of high-performance vehicles like his red Ferrari, Miguel Ángel Jiménez has secured to date 20 career wins on The European Tour and has, among other significant successes, represented Europe in the 2004 and 2010 editions of The Ryder Cup.

The Malaga-born golfer will be among what is set to be an exciting field of players vying for this year's Spanish title, which has been previously won by fellow compatriots Sergio Garcia and Alvaro Quiros, in 2002 and 2010 respectively, since the turn of the century.
 


An excellent entertainer and a great supporter of Spanish golf, Miguel Ángel Jiménez has played in every edition of the Open de España since his first appearance in 1983. His distinctive approach to golf has been hailed in all corners of the world.
 


The 50-year old, considered one of the most charismatic golfers on both sides of the pond, was recently compared by U.S. media to "The Most Interesting Man in the World" featured in the Dos Equis commercials. He currently ranks third in the all-time list of most European Tour events played, with 625 appearances.


Last December, Miguel Ángel Jiménez increased his accomplishments by becoming the oldest player to win a European Tour with his victory at The Hong Kong Open.

Miguel Ángel Jiménez was born in Churriana (Málaga) on January 5, 1964 and turned pro in 1982. His first appearance on The European Tour took place at The 1983 Open de España, which was played at Real Club de Golf Las Brisas, in Marbella, Málaga.
 


In 1997, he experienced "one of the most extraordinary weeks of my life", when he was vice-captain to the orders of his great friend Seve Ballesteros during the 32nd Ryder Cup Matches, held at Valderrama Golf Club, Cádiz, Spain. Fifteen years on, Miguel Ángel Jiménez was asked to join Spanish compatriot and European Team Captain, José Maria Olazábal, at the last edition of the biennial golf tournament held at Medinah Golf & Country Club, Chicago, U.S.
 


The Malagan golfer became a member of The European Tour in 1988, after his fourth attempt at the Qualifying School (1985, 86, 87 and 88). He has been competing for more than three consecutive decades, during which time he has gained ​​fans throughout the world, entertaining them with unforgettable moments.
 


Miguel Ángel Jiménez got his first victory on The European Tour at The Piaget Belgian Open in 1992 and, interestingly, achieved ​​13 out of his 20 wins while he was in his 40s.
