BRASELTON, Ga. -- The Junior All-Star at Forest Lake presented by Tom Holzer Ford has been honored with the 2013 Junior All-Star of the Year Award by the American Junior Golf Association. The AJGA recognized this event in its first year because of the committee's ability to create a complete Junior All-Star experience.
Each year, the AJGA presents awards to the tournaments with the best individual hospitality, Junior-Am fundraising tournament, charitable giving and volunteer base. Awards are also given to the events with the highest media and social media participation. Finally, the AJGA recognizes the year's most outstanding golf professional, superintendent and general manager, as well as the most improved event, best new event, best Junior All-Star tournament, best Invitational and overall tournament of the year. Awards were presented at the J.R. "Digger" Smith Award Banquet in Braselton, Ga., on March 8.
"Speaking on behalf of our members, staff and sponsors, Forest Lake Country Club is honored and thrilled to receive this award," said Tournament Chairman Richard Lynch. "As the first-time host of an AJGA event, it's especially gratifying for all of us involved."
Forest Lake Country Club provided players with a memorable experience by supplying a locker that each junior could use for the entire week, many of which were donated by the members of the club.
"More than 85 of our members volunteered in some capacity," Lynch said. "A number of them indicated that it was one of the most worthwhile and enjoyable experiences they've had at our club."
There were a number of activities for players to get involved with in between tournament rounds. After the second round, 12 players volunteered to give a clinic to the local chapter of the Tennis and Golf Association, a program for children to learn the values of different sports. Players were also invited to the Forest Lake Country Club pool to participate in a social activity, in which players had to chip a ball into an inner tube floating in the pool.
"As a family-oriented club, we wanted to provide a great tournament experience while making all of our guests feel extremely welcome in the Bloomfield Hills area," Lynch said.
In addition to providing a golf clinic, Junior-Am participants helped to raise $15,000 in donations going directly towards the AJGA's Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program and Evans Scholars Foundation.
The Junior All-Star at Forest Lake will become the AJGA Junior at Forest Lake presented by Tom Holzer Ford in 2014, an open event played from August 4-7 at Forest Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
