The 68th Transamerica-World Financial Group Western Intercollegiate Championship is set for April 12-13, 2014 at the historic Alister MacKenzie-designed Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz, CA. This tournament, one of the longest-running competitions of its kind, is once again, attracting top ranked collegiate teams and players.
According to Tournament Director John Kennaday, San José State University's men's golf coach, six of the 14 teams competing in the championship are ranked in the nation's top-25 by GolfStat. The field includes California, Stanford, Texas, Washington, SMU, and USC. In addition to host San Jose State, Arizona State, Hawaii, Memphis, Oregon, San Diego State, UC Irvine, and UTEP will round out the field.
Besides the two-day, 54-hole championship tournament, players will also participate in the Transamerica-WFG Western Intercollegiate College-Am on April 11, where they will be joined by alums and business leaders in a 5-person team format.
Golf enthusiasts are welcome to join the gallery free of charge during the Transamerica-World Financial Group Western on April 12-13. According to Coach Kennaday, the 2014 championship will be played in fond memory of Golf Legend and World Golf Hall of Famer Mr. Ken Venturi, WI champion in '51 and '53, and a loyal supporter of the tournament and San Jose University's men's golf program.
Now in its 68th year, "The Western" is one of the most highly coveted championship tournaments, conducted at a challenging venue where a player's talent is always tested. Pasatiempo Golf Club ranks amongst the best by Golfweek, Golf Digest and Golf Magazine.
In its commitment to health and wellness, the Western Intercollegiate tournament committee has invited the Sun SafeTee Program (in conjunction with the Santa Cruz Cancer Benefit Group) to be on site, Friday, April 11, to provide free skin cancer screening for players, coaches, and other College-AM participants.
In addition to premiere title sponsor Transamerica-WFG, the Western Intercollegiate has the support of platinum sponsors Frys.com Open, Cooper-Challen Realty, Brandenburg Family Foundation, and Don & Sally Lucas.
