CHARLESTON, S.C. - The 6th annual International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO) North America Golf Tourism Convention will take place in the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina, from June 8-11, 2014.
Charleston is widely hailed as a beacon of top golf, with former Ryder Cup and 2012 US PGA Championship host venue the Ocean Course on neighbouring Kiawah Island. It is considered one of the toughest tests of golf in America. And NAC 2014 is predicted to eclipse the 2013 event, making it the largest golf tourism event yet staged in North America.
Peter Walton, Chief Executive of global golf tourism industry organization IAGTO, said: "The Convention has been expanded to two full days of business sessions to cater to demand by delegates for even more meetings. We will also be giving delegates time to experience not only one of America's most beautiful cities but also one of its most spectacular golf destinations."
The Convention brings tour operators from around the world together with resorts, and destinations and tourism boards from North and South America and the Caribbean in an effort to further develop golf travel. Currently, 271 of IAGTO's 500-plus tour operators sell golf in North America. IAGTO operators account for 85% (over $2 billion annually) of golf holiday packages sold around the world.
The three-day event is expected to attract more than 300 delegates from North America and around the world. A total of 275 delegates attended the 2013 event in Marco Island, Florida.
Walton added: "In 2014, we will be taking the North American Convention to the historic heart of South Carolina, Charleston, and a wonderful golf destination. The delegates will be housed at the Mills House Hotel right in the centre of the city."
Gary Edwards, Managing Director of Coastal South Carolina, described the decision to move the event to the state for 2014 as "a great honour" and he said it would form the focal point of the region's marketing efforts this year.
"When most people think of golf in South Carolina they are thinking of the coastal destinations such as Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head and Charleston but this is also an opportunity to showcase the entire state - a great chance for tour operators from all over the world to see a world-class golf destination."
