Equinox Resort to host Orvis Cup Hickory Stick Shaft Pro-Am

MANCHESTER VILLAGE, Vt. -- The 238-year old Equinox Resort & Spa will host the 2nd Annual Orvis Cup Hickory Stick Shaft Pro-Am Tournament at the Gleneagles Golf Course in Manchester Village, Vermont on May 20-21. The 2007 Orvis Cup, presented by The Orvis Company and Johnny Walker, will be the only professional championship in the U.S. this year contested solely with hickory shaft equipment since the advent of steel equipment over 75 years ago.

The Orvis Cup was originally founded by George and Louise Orvis and was contested at the Ekwanok Country Club until 1927, when it moved to the Equinox Golf Links, which is now the Gleneagles Golf Course at The Equinox. The Equinox Resort & Spa decided to partner with The Orvis Company to resurrect the Orvis Cup in 2006, which was a huge success. Like last year, the game will be played in its original medium - with hickory sticks - in honor of the rich history of the Orvis’, who were two of America’s most influential golf patrons. The Batten Kill Watershed Alliance will be the benefactor of this historic event, as a portion of the proceeds will be donated to promote stewardship and enhancement of the Batten Kill Watershed in the states of Vermont and New York.

The tournament will consist of a four-man, better ball format over 36-holes with teams consisting of one golf professional and three amateur players. Each Professional and his/her team of amateurs will compete for two days over 36 holes in a gross and net best ball of the team stroke play event. There will be gross and net awards.

There will also be a contest of the golf professionals consisting of a 36-hole stroke play event with a top prize of $1,000. All players will use hickory shaft clubs whose manufacture precedes 1936. Replica clubs will be accepted at the discretion of the tournament committee. Clubs and costumes will be available for those who don't have hickories.

Participants in the tournament are encouraged to dress in the attire of the era of the day (circa 1927) and as such, there will be awards for the best-dressed team. The Grand Prize for the best-dressed team will be a three-day/two-night golf package for four at The Equinox Resort & Spa.

The 2007 Orvis Cup Tournament package includes one night of luxury accommodations at The Equinox Resort & Spa, participation in tournament, all meals and all events associated with the tournament. All taxes and gratuities are included in the tournament package.

Rates start at $499 for amateurs and $379 for professionals. For more information about the tournament please contact:

The Gleneagles Golf Course at the Equinox is a repeat recipient of Golf Magazine’s prestigious Silver Medal Award and was also rated the #1 golf course in New England by Golf Digest (2006). The 18-hole championship-quality golf course was built in 1927 by Walter Travis, and combines a dramatic blend of the past and present in a picturesque mountain setting. A $3.5 million restoration in 1992 by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones brought the course to modern standards within the context of Travis’s original routing while following an environmentally friendly approach.
