Estonian Golf & Country Club hosts Royal Blackheath for biennial matchplay

Estonian Golf and Country Club has welcomed the return of Royal Blackheath Golf Club to compete for The Schmidt Trophy.

The two-day biennial tournament, named after the founder and President of Estonian Golf & Country Club Mait Schmidt, was staged on the highly acclaimed Sea Course - ranked in Golf World magazine's Top 100 Golf Courses in Continental Europe.

On day one of competition the team from Estonian Golf & Country Club, part of the European Tour Courses network, held the returning champions from Royal Blackheath - the world's oldest golf club - to a 4.5-4.5 draw.

However, the visitors proved the stronger side on day two winning six points from an available nine to win 10.5-7.5.

Hanno Kross, Estonian Golf & Country Club Chief Executive, said: "The inaugural match for The Schmidt Trophy was the first international club match staged in Estonia.

"We enjoy a good relationship with Royal Blackheath and I am already looking forward to playing the next match in two years time."

Royal Blackheath Golf Club will have the opportunity to defend The Schmidt Trophy when it hosts Estonian Golf & Country for the return fixture in October 2015.
