Jack Schmidt joins North Carolina's Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club recently appointed Jack Schmidt as director of sales and marketing. Schmidt, who begins in his new role today, joins the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club from The Carolina Inn where he served as general manager from 2012 - 2013. Schmidt was promoted to general manager of The Carolina Inn after serving as regional director of sales and marketing for Destination Hotels and Resorts, the management company that operates the Inn. The Carolina Inn is a historic hotel owned by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and located on its campus.

Schmidt's responsibilities include managing the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club's six-member sales team and the entire Inn's sales and marketing, public relations and advertising initiatives. He also oversees centralized reservations and revenue management, and the Executive Club membership dining program. His appointment comes just one month before the Inn celebrates its 25th anniversary. In the year ahead, the Inn has anniversary-themed initiatives planned with Duke University and for its worldwide guests, as well as looking to further maximize its marketing as one of 15 exclusive charter members of the Southern Living Hotel Collection.

Schmidt has enjoyed a remarkable and distinguished 33-year hotel career primarily spent working for luxury and upscale independent hotels, resorts, casino hotels and conference centers. In addition to his most recent roles at The Carolina Inn, he's served as vice president and regional director of sales and marketing with Destination Hotels and Resort's Suncadia Resort outside of Seattle; chief marketing officer for Benchmark Hospitality International; executive vice president and partner with Accommodations Express; and president and partner with the Onyx Group. Schmidt's conference experience also includes positions as director of sales and marketing for The El San Juan Hotel & Casino in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and hotel and casino experience in New Jersey and Las Vegas, including a role as director of sales for the Trump Plaza Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, N.J.

The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club's General Manager Randy Kolls was thrilled with Schmidt's appointment saying, "I've known Jack for over 20 years and served side by side with him on many occasions. Ironically, Jack was on the pre-opening task force in 1988 when the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club opened in Durham on the campus of Duke University and Jack assisted in getting the hotel prepped and ready for its grand opening. His skill set, sales strengths, industry knowledge and commitment will benefit the Inn immensely for years to come."

Schmidt is also actively involved in the hospitality community. He is a past chairman and board member of Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International and past board member of the International Associations of Conference Centers (IACC). Currently, he serves as a board member of the Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau and the Triangle Area Hotel Motel Association for Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club is located on the campus of Duke University, only twenty minutes from Raleigh-Durham International Airport and ten minutes from Research Triangle Park. The Washington Duke Inn is the only AAA Four Diamond hotel in Durham and was recently named as one of only 15 hotels in the Southern Living Hotel Collection: a small, curated group of independent, four- and five-star level hotels, resorts and inns that span 18 Southern states and offer the best in authentic Southern hospitality. Nestled on 300 acres filled with tall pines and hardwoods, the Inn is known for its beautiful facility and grounds, 271 elegantly appointed guest rooms and suites, marvelous cuisine in the Four Diamond Award-winning Fairview Dining Room, the Bull Durham Bar, the Robert Trent Jones-designed 18-hole championship Duke University golf course, and convenience to local points of interest. It is set apart from other area hotels and conference centers by its unparalleled service, gracious staff, luxurious interiors and attention to detail. The Inn is owned by Duke University and is managed by WDI Durham Management Company of Durham, N.C.
