ORLANDO, Fla. -- NBC Sports Group will present comprehensive coverage this week of the American Century Championship -- the nation’s premier celebrity golf tournament -- from Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Lake Tahoe, Nev. NBC Sports Network will air the opening round on Friday, 4-7 p.m. ET, with weekend coverage on NBC, 3-6 p.m. ET both days. Golf Channel will re-air the first-round on Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. ET.
SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT CELEBRITIES HEADLINE FIELD: More than 80 sports and entertainment stars are scheduled to compete, including BIG BREAK NFL from Puerto Rico competitors Jerry Rice, Tim Brown and Mark Rypien. Other notables include Aaron Rodgers, Charles Barkley, Carson Palmer, Alex Smith, Steph Curry, John Elway, John Smoltz, Shane Battier, Ray Allen, Deron Williams, Steve Spurrier, Ray Romano and defending champion, Dan Quinn. The tournament also will feature first time players Chipper Jones, John Fox and Michael Phelps – star of Golf Channel’s fifth season of THE HANEY PROJECT. MORNING DRIVE co-host Gary Williams also will compete in the championship for the first time, and has formally challenged fellow co-host Ahmad Rashad to see who will perform better in the championship.
TOURNAMENT BROADCAST TEAM: Host Bob Papa and analyst Roger Maltbie will anchor coverage from the 18th tower at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. They will be joined by tower reporter Gary Koch and course reporters Mark Rolfing and Notah Begay. Alex Flanagan will conduct celebrity interviews on the 17th tee.
BIG BREAK GLASS BREAK CHARITY CHALLENGE: On Saturday, July 20, Golf Channel will host a special ‘BIG BREAK Glass Break Challenge’ for charity on the driving range at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course. The Glass Break Challenge, one of the more popular challenges on Golf Channel’s BIG BREAK reality competition series, is featured on the upcoming season of BIG BREAK NFL from Puerto Rico, premiering Tuesday, Oct. 8. Saturday’s charity challenge, hosted by NBC’s Sunday Night Football sideline reporter and BIG BREAK NFL co-host Michele Tafoya, will feature celebrities – including BIG BREAK NFL competitors Jerry Rice, Tim Brown and Mark Rypien – attempting to break a pane of glass with a knockdown shot in a timely fashion. The top-three times will receive cash towards the charity of his/her choosing. Highlights of the charity challenge will air during NBC’s coverage on Saturday, and will be developed into a web series on GolfChannel.com, scheduled to air around the Oct. 8 premiere of BIG BREAK NFL.
