Enjoy a Weiskopf challenge at Forest Dunes in northern Michigan, stay in style at the Lake AuSable Lodge

ROSCOMMON, Mich. -- Forest Dunes Golf Club, which was designed by former British Open winner Tom Weiskopf, is unlike any other in northern Michigan. The front nine features parkland-style holes meandering through corridors of red and jack pines, with elaborate bunkering and sandy waste areas on the sides. The back nine is quite different, featuring open and exposed rugged native sand areas with scruffy underbrush bordering and crossing fairways and greens.

Forest Dunes continues to be among the most consistently ranked courses in the country by the leading golf publications. Golf Digest selected the course as the "Best New Upscale Public Course in America" in 2003. It is also ranked No. 23 among "America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses", as well as No. 4 (*No. 2 public) in the state of Michigan. Its sister publication, Golf World, also selected Forest Dunes the No. 1 public course in America through its reader survey in 2009. In addition, GOLF selected it among the "Top 10 You Can Play" in 2003, as well as No. 45 on their list of the nation's Top 100 Courses and GolfWeek includes them among the magazine's Top 100 Modern Courses.

New for 2013 is the opening of the Lake AuSable Lodge in April. The lodge features the same Adirondack architectural theme as the nearby golf clubhouse, using hardwoods, cedar shake siding and stone on the exterior. The lodge offers 14 rooms and suites that overlook scenic Lake AuSable and the first tee of the Forest Dunes golf course.

Dates: Good through Oct. 20, 2013.

Price range: $119.
