It's the most wonderful time of the year – the LPGA begins its 2007 trek around the world on Thursday in Hawaii. I said it last year and I'll repeat it now, "There’s more drama in store for the LPGA in 2007 than the PGA." The PGA Tour has been boxed in by the golf media, television in particular. It's all Tiger all the time unless he doesn't play and then they turn to Phil. And if there's no Phil and no Tiger, well, you get the picture.
The LPGA generates a better cast of characters. In 2006 the ladies produced much more suspense and excitement in the major championships. The overall season generated more interest when Lorena Ochoa found her groove with six victories and six runner-up finishes. That also knocked Annika off the thrown. A well publicized cast of rookies played admirably but did not win. Seon Hwa Lee won Rookie of the Year honors. A 20-year-old won $1 million at the grand finale ADT Championship which was so successful it prompted Finchem to create the FedEx(Lax) Cup.
So pay attention in 2007 and look for the answers to the following questions. There might be a quiz in December.
Will Juli Inkster continue to prove that age is an attitude?
Just how tough is Lorena Ochoa?
Who will get her initial LPGA victory first? Natalie Gulbis, Morgan Pressel, Brittany Lang, or Ai Miyazato?
Is Annika done trying to figure out what she wants to do with the rest of her life and can now concentrate totally on golf again?
Will another Korean win Rookie of the Year? They have five of the last nine.
Get out your scorecards and let's enjoy 2007 with the LPGA. I'll betcha it's more fun than watching J.B. Holmes winning the FBR.
