Googie & Friends Fundraiser Golf Tournament benefits youth golf

OAKLAND, Calif. -- This year the annual Googie & Friends Fundraiser Golf Tournament, which is set for Monday, August 12 at Metropolitan Golf Links (Oakland, CA), will not only raise funds for Oakland-based junior golf programs, it will also provide a chance for the community to recognize dedicated Event Founder, Leonard "Googie" Kirtley, Jr,. Known to many as Mr. Golf of Oakland, Kirtley will be celebrating his 90th birthday surrounded by friends and fellow volunteers at the popular fundraising event.

Googie has been passionate about the game of golf for decades, first as a golfer and later as a golf community leader. "It is through his dedicated work at the community-based level as well as his long commitment to the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) that sets him apart from others," shared Gary Carls, president of the Oakland Turfgrass Education Initiative. "The Googie and Friends Fundraiser tournament exists, in great part, due to the efforts of Googie and his passion for providing affordable golf opportunities for Oakland youth."

The five youth programs benefiting from the tournament, which also have the continued support of Vice Mayor Larry Reid (City of Oakland-District 7), are: Ace Kids Golf, Lake Chabot Junior Golf Academy, Metropolitan Junior Golf Program, Oakland Turfgrass Education Initiative and The First Tee of Oakland.

The tournament commences with 6:30 a.m. registration, followed by warm-up on the range, and 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. Format is four-person team scramble. Entry fee is $500 per foursome (or $150 per player) and includes green fee, shared cart, continental breakfast, bucket of balls, a Googie bag, plus lunch and prizes. Registration deadline is Aug. 1.

Sponsorship support is vital to the future of youth golf programs in Oakland. The following sponsorship offerings are available: Platinum Sponsor-$1000, Gold Sponsor-$500, or Hole Sponsor-$150.
