Kiel Christianson: Braving the cold to try new golf gear

Sigh…I'm feeling nostalgic.

Two days ago, I opened up boxes containing the 2007 models of the Adams Golf Insight BUL driver and the Cleveland Golf HiBore driver. On my broad shoulders falls the duty of testing and reviewing these clubs, and that duty weighs heavily.

Oh, who am I trying to kid? I was so stoked to put these long-drive machines into play that I ran out into the snow to take some practice swings. No coat. Boxer shorts flapping in the wind.

The embarrassment this spectacle caused my daughter will likely cost me a pretty penny in therapy someday.

Anyway, the nostalgia hit me as I reluctantly retreated back indoors and toweled the melting snow off the gleaming clubheads. I was reminded of the time in college when I showed up a bit early for a date, and the young woman's roommate let me in while my date was still in the shower.

When the poor girl exited the shower, she had no way of knowing that I was there, sitting on the couch, which luckily for me happened to be situated between the bathroom and her room.

After a great deal of embarrassment, apology, half-hearted eye-averting and self-conscious laughter, she got dressed and we eventually departed for the date.

That, my friends, was the longest, most frustrating date of my life. All I could think of was what I had seen, and how long I might potentially have to wait to, well, you know, see it again. Torture, utter torture.

And now...when, oh when will winter end? Torture, utter torture.

I wonder, with deep fondness and sincere interest, where that woman is today. And I wonder if she recalls her damp scamper from bathroom to bedroom that night.

And I wonder whether she would be flattered or offended if she knew that every time I glance over at the two sleek, shining drivers propped in the corner of my office, I think of her.

The Adams Insight BUL driver features a high-tech geometry.

The Cleveland HiBore features a "scooped" crown to redistribute weight low and back.
