Nov. 26, 2004 – Ready? Here's one of the nuttiest, most politically incorrect golf products of the year. This is the brainchild of businessman (and golf nut) Chris Wehrle and his golf nut partner Candy Phelps (who happens to be his mother). And what is their contribution to the wonderful world of golf?
A regulation putter that looks unremarkable in the bag. Take it out and get ready to sink a twenty-footer and out of the shaft floats a super-sexy image of a bikini-clad young woman. The product has, appropriately, been christened the Putt-Her (see www.blueballsports.com).
"I’ve always been crazy about golf," notes Wehrle, "After hundreds of tournaments and gifts and freebies, I figured there had to be a new idea out there." At a client’s office, a torn price tag on a golf club leaning against a wall caught the wannabe entrepreneur’s eye. "It looked," he says, "just like the silhouette of a pretty girl."
The wheels started turning. Soon after, Wehrle noticed a colleague’s collectible pen – and had a bright idea. He notes: "Everyone has seen the souvenir pens that change. Of course, my friends liked the tip and strip type where the pretty girl, or her clothes, would appear and disappear like magic when you tilted the pen. I figured, why not use the same idea on a putter? Voila! The Putt-Her was born.
Candy thought that the Putt-Her was a winning idea right from the start. Says Phelps: " I’d worked in the golf industry for years and never seen anything like it." No kidding. Phelps is the proper mother and country club member – an unlikely source for a business partner. It was Candy who actually supplied capital and enthusiasm and even found the "her" to adorn the shaft of the Putt-Her: Agnieska, a gorgeous Polish immigrant and hairdresser.
Wehrle and Phelps see the Putt-Her as a great "gag-gift" as well as a good corporate gift idea - company or other logos can be added to the shaft of the putter or to its black, cloth cover. Whatever happens, the array of gifts for the male golfer this Christmas promises to be just a little bit less mundane.
The product retails for $78. For more information on the Putt-Her please go to www.blueballsports.com
