YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Winter finally is over in Michigan and just as grass needs sunshine to come alive, you can grow your golf game with a trip to the Kendall/Janson Academy Schools at Tullymore Golf Resort in Stanwood.
Beginning May 21 and offered throughout the season, it's two or three days of solid golf, expert instruction by Dave Kendall and Lynn Janson in the morning and 18 holes in the afternoon on Tullymore, ranked No. 1 New Upscale Public Course by Golf Digest when it opened in 2002 and when designer Jim Engh was named Golf Architect of the Year.
Dave Kendall, twice named Teacher of the Year by the Michigan PGA, founded the acclaimed Kendall Golf Academy at Miles of Golf in Ypsilanti. It has worked with players who have succeeded on the national level as well anyone who has moaned and groaned over a day of lost balls, slices and hooks.
"Lynn and I are very pleased to be partnering with Tullymore, an award-winning Golf Resort known throughout the Midwest for its courses and facilities," said Kendall, a two-time Michigan Senior Open champion. "Only an hour from Grand Rapids, Tullymore is a convenient location for students in west and central Michigan."
Lynn Janson has won all of the state's major championships from the Michigan Amateur when he was at Michigan State to nine Michigan PGA Section majors. A five-time Michigan PGA Player of the Year, the longtime head club pro and now owner of Hastings CC was inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame in 1992.
Kendall and Janson spread six two-day Full Swing/Wedge Game sessions throughout the spring and summer. The Schools include accommodations, meals, nine hours of instruction, use of the practice area and two 18-hole rounds with a Kendall/Janson professional. Other professionals may include Jack Seltzer, 2012 Michigan Golf Hall of Fame member, and Frank McAuliffe, Michigan PGA's 2010 Golf Professional of the Year.
There is one professional for every two to three students and a maximum of 12 students and minimum of four per school.
Session dates include: May 21-22, June 9-10, June 24-25, July 23-24, Aug. 27-28 and Sept. 15-16. Dependent upon enrollment, the one-day sessions are: May 23, July 14, and Aug. 7. Two-day sessions cost $1,195 and single day sessions are 50% less—with lodging optional.
The Schools begin at 8 a.m. with orientation, warmup, use of video and TrackMan, review of the full swing and working on the range. At 11 a.m. it's focusing on the all-important wedge game.
The afternoon is 18 holes with your professional on Tullymore which impressively winds through woods and wetlands. It has five par 3s and five par 5s, plenty of birdie chances. After golf, refreshments are at 6 p.m. and dinner at 7 p.m, on your own or with the group.
Tullymore and its sister course, St. Ives, are located one hour north of downtown Grand Rapids.
