Surrey golfer wins AEG grand final

Nov. 23 2004 – Surrey golfer Anne Haylock has scored a one-shot win in the grand final of the AEG British Ladies Amateur Tournament in Sun City, South Africa. Anne, a 12-handicapper from Dulwich & Sydenham Hill, said: “It’s the biggest competition I’ve ever won and I’m absolutely thrilled.”

She was one of 20 players to qualify for the final of the Daily Telegraph sponsored competition, from an original entry of 55,000 golfers from 1100 clubs. “Having got through to the final I decided to enjoy every minute of it – and I did,” said Anne. “Winning was a bonus, a big bonus!”

Anne opened her challenge in the 36-hole final with a net 71 on the Lost City course. Her score was one-under her handicap and put her in third place, but five shots off the pace.

However, in the second round on the Gary Player course, the early leaders dropped back and Anne’s 74 saw her safely home, one shot ahead of playing partner, Christina Warr of College Pines Golf Club, Worksop.

“As the other two fell away Christina and I battled it out and she played fantastically well.” Anne, who runs medical conferences for a publishing company, returned to golf only 2½ years ago after spending 15 years in Africa.
