PORTOLA, Calif. -- Known for its western flair and ranch style charm, 2013 marks a thrilling year for Grizzly Ranch Golf Club as it opens on Friday, April 26 for its eighth season. The club welcomes new owners, new stay and play packages, a new website, and again, a top forty ranking by Golf Digest, putting the course in the top 3-4 percent of all public and private courses in California. While most other mountain golf courses in the High Sierra are partially covered in snow come late April, or are challenged by spring frost delays, Grizzly Ranch is not because of its ideal location.
Conveniently located only 45 minutes northwest of Reno, Nev. and 50 minutes north of Truckee on Highway 89, Grizzly Ranch is a true gem, a find that's worth the drive.
Grizzly Ranch Golf Club, which opened in 2005, features a Bob Cupp-designed 18-hole championship layout. All abilities find this exceptional par 72 course both challenging and enjoyable. To hone a golfer's game, the practice facility awaits guests, complete with an all grass driving range, putting and chipping greens. Nestled where the Sierra Nevada Range and Sierra Valley meet, Grizzly Ranch is surrounded by more than a million acres of pristine national and state forests. This is mountain golf as it should be offering soaring mountain views, a moderate climate and an overall sense of serenity.
Under new ownership, Grizzly Ranch Golf Club guests and members will notice numerous enhancements such as the opening of the Lake House for indoor and terrace seating overlooking the 18th fairway with waterfalls and ponds, daily lunch service, full bar menu, beer on tap and seating at the "sunken" bar. The Lake House's western motif with rich wood and many windows gives club members and guests unobstructed views while enjoying time off the course. This is a welcoming place to share a casual bite with friends or to simply relax.
The Golf Shop drives home the Western theme with items for sale ranging from Cowboy boots and ranch wear to Ping, FootJoy, Titleist and Maui Jim merchandise - the atypical golf wear.
"This year we open with much more than just our spectacular greens and exceptional service," says Van Batchelder, director of golf, Grizzly Ranch Golf Club. "We are re-opening the Lake House for daily lunch service and a full bar - a step back to the early days. We look forward to our members and guests enjoying these enhancements."
Play and Stay Packages at the onsite Wolf Tree Cabins, located along the 9th fairway, offer golfers a serene golf getaway. Two and three bedroom cabins are available, and each one boasts sprawling views of the course and mountains from their many windows and large decks. www.grizzlyranchcabins.com
