Val Skinner, a 20-year veteran and multiple-winner on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) Tour, organized the Val Skinner Foundation and the annual LIFE Event (LPGA Pros in the Fight to Eradicate Breast Cancer) in honor of friend and fellow LPGA player Heather Farr who lost her battle with breast cancer at the young age of 28. The foundation’s mission is centered around a “Young Women’s Initiative” designed to target women in their twenties and thirties with the message of the importance of breast health and breast cancer awareness.

The LIFE Event continues to bring together the world’s most elite women golfers with sponsors to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. To date, the LIFE Event has raised $3.5 million for breast cancer research and programs for beneficiaries the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Some of these programs include the On the Way to the Cure – Komen On the Go™ interactive mobile tour taking breast cancer awareness and education to college campuses, community and sports events. LIFE Funds were also used to launch the “LIFE Center” at CINJ, a Breast Cancer Risk Assessment and Counseling Program that brings together a multidisciplinary team of breast cancer experts to study unique cancer causes, identify novel risk factors and develop effective preventive strategies for young women at risk for breast cancer and their families.
