PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Bob Sowards of Dublin, Ohio, earned his second career PGA Tournament Series title with a closing round of 67 Monday on the Wanamaker Course at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
At 137, he finished three strokes ahead of John Seltzer of Ann Arbor, Mich., second among 32 starters with 71-140. Rod Perry of Port Orange, Fla., was another two strokes back on 68-142. Perry won the opening event of the 37th annual PGA Tournament Series on Nov. 29, on the adjacent Ryder Course.
First-round leader Casey Bourque of Sanford added 75 for 143 to tie for fourth.
"I've played well, consistent, all year," said Sowards, a PGA teaching professional at New Albany (Ohio) Country Club and a three-time PGA Professional Player of the Year. "I didn't win our Section championship but I was Player of the Year," for the Southern Ohio PGA. He earned $1,700 from the $8,200 purse here.
Sowards started fast with birdies on four of the first five holes (Nos. 1, 2, 4 and 5), then eagled the par-5 seventh hole with driver, 5-iron and 10-foot putt. "I didn't miss a shot until I pulled my drive into the bushes at 13," enroute to his first of three bogeys. "That seemed to stop my momentum and it was a struggle just to get in." He also bogeyed the 15th and 18th holes. Sowards made three birdies and a bogey Sunday in an opening round of 70.
The third event of the season will be played Wednesday and Thursday on the nearby Dye Course.
