IRVINE, Calif. -- Collegiate Golf Alliance (CGA), the premier online registration and golf event management tool, announced today the 45 schools that will be competing for the 5th Annual National Collegiate Golf Championship in Las Vegas, Nevada November 10-12, 2006. The California-based company has teamed with the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) to administer the 2006 National Collegiate Golf Championship. Formatted as a two person scramble event for collegiate and university amateurs, the NCGC allows golfers to represent their university and compete to be the 2006 National Champion. Participants can compete in one of three championship divisions: Student, Faculty/Staff and Alumni/Community.
This amateur golf event is focused on non-NCAA university recreational golfers who participated in one of 40 local qualifying tournaments held across the United States this fall. Local Qualifying winners advance to the official National Collegiate Golf Championship in Las Vegas. Over 700 colleges and universities were represented in local qualifying event, making this CGA and NIRSA event the premier recreational college golf event in the country. “The NCGC brings together students, faculty and alumni to compete for their university and against other colleges and universities. If the level of play at the Local Qualifiers is an indication of the talent level, we’ll be in for quite a competitive tournament. School pride is taken to another level for these students and alumni members” stated CGA’s President and CEO Mike Munson.
Teams including those from University of Iowa, University of Rhode Island, University of Miami, University of Texas, UCLA and University of Southern California will compete in this year’s event. For a full listing of participants please visit http://www.cgagolflinks.com/ncgc_2006_lqresults.asp
The road to the championship was a little longer for University of Vermont students Jeremy Appelbaum and David Grossman. The pair shot an eight under 64, to win the 2005 National Collegiate Golf Championship (NCGC) at Badlands Golf Course. Grossman, a Senior Political Science major from Linwood, NJ, and Appelbaum, a Geology major from Ft. Lauderdale Fl, had to drive over 300 miles from Burlington, VT. to Kinston, RI for the University of Rhode Island Local Qualifier. With their one shot victory score of 63, they qualified for the Championships in Las Vegas. Next stop, a 2,600 mile cross country trip for the National Championship for their victory.
“ We had to prepare for this event with inside swinging and carpet putting as there has been some snow back in Vermont and the courses are closed down” “We have not played golf in six weeks so it was fun to come out and see grass and avoid the snow” Grossman stated. We can only hope more snow birds enjoy the 2006 National Championship.
The NCGC includes a Pairings Party at the Nellis Air Force Base Las Vegas Air Show, Practice Round and Championship round at the Revere Golf Club, awards banquet and Putt Off for a chance to win $25,000. Portions of proceeds from the Local Qualifiers and the Championship will benefit the NIRSA Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that provides opportunities for students in professional development, research, scholarships, and educational resources. To date, the NCGC program has raised over $16,000 for the Foundation.
Sponsors of the event include Southwest Airlines, Warrior Custom Golf, Cutter & Buck, American Hole in One, Red Bull, Sports Illustrated On Campus, Advantage Fitness Products, Golf World, Oakley and American Golf. To provide additional resources, CGA has appointed six regional managers to assist in the programming of campus golf events as well as help coordinate the National Tournament.
