Kraft Foods has selected a leading sports, entertainment and media company to manage and operate the Kraft Nabisco Championship on its behalf beginning in 2013. IMG will immediately begin working on plans for next year's Championship.
Golf's first major, which will celebrate its 42nd year of operation in 2013, along with its 31st year as a major championship on the LPGA Tour, is played annually at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California.
"IMG's long history of success in golf, including its passion for women's golf, makes it the ideal company to manage such an important tournament," said David Blake-Thomas, Executive Director and Chairman, Kraft Nabisco Championship. "The Kraft Nabisco Championship is not just golf's first major of the year, it is a tradition that has produced some of the most memorable moments in women's golf. We look forward to continuing that great history with IMG as a partner."
With the addition of the Kraft Nabisco Championship, IMG now manages two of the four majors in women's golf each year. IMG also stages the Ricoh Women's British Open in conjunction with the Ladies' Golf Union, which founded the event in 1976. The event has been co-sanctioned by the LPGA and LET since 1994 and gained Major status in 2001.
"IMG is honored to be given the opportunity to manage the Kraft Nabisco Championship and plans to work with Kraft Foods to maintain much of what has made the tournament successful for so long, including key personnel and the long-time host site at Mission Hills Country Club," said W. David Livingston, Senior Vice President and Director of North American Sales for IMG Golf. "The Kraft Nabisco Championship is always considered one of the strongest fields in women's golf, and coupled with IMG's experience managing more than 40 tournaments around the globe each year, we look forward to working with Kraft Foods and the other Championship partners to make this world-class championship even more successful."
About the Kraft Nabisco Championship
The Kraft Nabisco Championship is golf's first major and one of the LPGA Tour's most prestigious events. Founded in 1972 by David Foster and Dinah Shore, the Kraft Nabisco Championship earned the designation as a major tournament in 1983. Contested at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif., since its inception, the Championship holds the distinction of being the second oldest golf tournament continuously held at the same course.
For many, the event is most distinguished by one of golf's most beloved traditions: the champion's leap into Poppie's Pond, located adjacent to the 18th green. In 1988, the first champion's leap into Poppie's Pond was taken by Amy Alcott, and since has become one of the most anticipated and memorable traditions in golf.
