Orlando, FL. – Nov. 18, 2004 – The top miniature golfers from around the country will be putting for the title of National Miniature Golf Champion at the 2004 Harris Cup National Miniature Golf Championships held on November 21, 2004 at Hawaiian Rumble Miniature Golf on International Drive in Orlando, Florida. A 9:00 AM shotgun start is planned.
It may be miniature golf, but this tournament is far from miniature. The purse is $10,000 with the winner taking home $5,000 and the Harris Cup! There is no buying into this tournament. It is invitation only! About 45 players qualified this year in tournaments around the country from California to New Jersey and from North to South. The tournament reaches beyond the US as well with two players coming to the finals from Sweden - they qualified while in the states touring miniature golf courses. Qualifying tournaments are held each year at courses built by Harris Miniature Golf Courses, Inc., the tournaments founder and sponsor.
“We started this tournament in 2000 as a way to help our course owners gain more exposure in their local market as well as heighten the awareness of miniature golf in general. Most of the qualifying tournaments are held for the benefit of local charities, so it’s a great vehicle to help courses reach out and bring their local communities together,” said Richard Lahey, owner and president of Harris. “Each year the tournament has grown and is becoming a more and more prestigious event. We have had players from all over call us to ask where they can play to qualify. It’s pretty exciting.” Miniature golf has long been a wholesome family activity enjoyed by Americans. Will tournaments like this bring miniature golf to the professional sports level in the USA as it is in Europe? Time will tell.
