People love to fight against Donald Trump's development plans. But the homeowners waging a war with Trump over the mammoth U.S. flags he's flying over his golf courses in Palm Beach and Los Angeles have lost their minds.
Along with any sense.
You know what you do if you think Trump's flags are way too big? You keep your mouth shut and moan about the length of his driveways or all the limo traffic cutting through the neighborhood.
For the flag has a way of galvinzaing support for anyone - even Trump. People are funny like that. It's the flag. You know the symbol for our country, our entire way of life and a visual that generations of soliders have hoisted in wars.
Ask Clint Eastwood. It's good box office to pay respect to the flag. It's never good business to disrespect it.
But that's what these bitter, rich homeowners are doing. Residents near Trump's exclusive Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach actually called Trump's monster-sized U.S. flag "unpatriotic." Yes and those soliders really should do more for the country.
Trump - who you just know is hating this publicity - fired back with "That's rather anti-American."
Look, it doesn't matter that it's 15 times the size zoning laws allow. It's the U.S. flag. Again, Americans are funny about that. They actually respect their symbols.
Trump already won one of these fights in the LA area. Residents waged protests about a larger-than-city-regulations flag. The City Council noted the number of calls and letters they got defending that flag and ... it's obviously still flying.
"They were voting on taking down the American flag," Trump told a New York paper, all but laughing at the idiots cause. "The City Council received hundreds of e-mails from angry citizens - including war veterans - who were thrilled with the flag and wanted it to remain."
You want to annoy your neighbor? Go ahead and put up a Stars and Stripes that's bigger than your house. Your mission will be accomplished and many more people will be thanking you for it.
There are different rules for the U.S. flag. It's not treated like a pool, a patio or a second garage. And that's a good thing.
