Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, N.J. to see big renovations

New Clubhouse, Facilities and Renovations at Springdale Golf Club, Princeton, NJ
The semiprivate, membership leased Springdale Golf Club in Princeton, New Jersey, began renovations to the course this summer under the direction of The Roger Rulewich Group. Springdale, is the home golf course for the Princeton University golf team and is available for play by students and alumni.

The original golf course, founded in 1895 by alumni, faculty and undergraduates was a nine hole track that is listed by the USGA as one of the first 100 clubs established in the US. It was included in Golf Magazine’s 1995 list of “The First 100 Clubs in America”. A new 18 hole course designed by Gerald Lambert in 1915 replaced the original nine. William Flynn redid some of the features in 1928. At present the golf course is a par 71, measuring 6,380 yards from the longest tees, with a course rating of 70.8 and slope of 128.

Springdale Golf Club, has enlisted the services of The Roger Rulewich Group to implement a renovation plan of the golf course and practice facilities. The membership approved a, recently completed, new clubhouse, on a new site. It now sits on the land that had been occupied by the old driving range. A new driving range, designed by David Tanner and constructed by the club is located adjacent to this area.

Rulewich was contracted to design and build a practice and short game area. It will include three greens surrounded by 15,000 square feet of fairway- an 8400 square foot putting green; 5600 square foot chipping green; and 2500 square foot bunker green. These will all be part of the practice facility complex, adjacent to the new clubhouse.

Charlie Beach, Springdale's Board President, is pleased with the changes and additions to the club, the work that began this summer, and those on the drawing board for next year.

Additional recommendations from Roger Rulewich would result in changes to the routing and length. The plan also calls for a new green and an irrigation system. The board is currently considering incorporating these changes and hope to have a decision by early spring. “The changes being done and proposed will not only improve the look and layout, but also the quality of play. Most importantly it will provide a better and more enjoyable round of golf for all levels of ability”, stated Mr. Beach. The work done and recommendations, submitted to the membership for consideration, include, “Bringing the layout and design up to a level that will allow the course to be played with current day equipment and offer a better overall golf experience”, added Roger Rulewich.
