LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Professional Team Golf League (PTGL) – the only competitive team league consisting solely of touring professional golfers – was unveiled today, giving pros a new showcase for their talents and turning fans into ProCoaches™, whose strategies drive the game.
PTGL will initially comprise of eight North American-based teams during its inaugural season in 2007. Team rosters will consist of touring professional golfers -- not playing on the PGA or Nationwide Tours -- who will be paid to play. They will also be given the opportunity to build their competitive arsenal head-to-head with opponents through team competitions.
"While people think of golf as a sport of individuals, PTGL makes it anything but," said Dave Braun, founder and chairman of PTGL. "As match play catches fire with players and fans alike, PTGL is advancing this popular team approach further as the first league to put paid professional teams together for a season of play while getting fans in on the action."
Developing the Next Generation of Champions
PTGL will give the rising stars of golf match play experience while they entertain fans. The league's first regular season will consist of eight weekends of events at some of the nation's top golf clubs in a format that pitts four teams against one another (team vs. team) in three single-day match play competitions. Each day of competition will include nine holes each of
singles, foursomes (alternate shot) and four-ball (best ball).
At the end of the season, the top four teams will compete in a single-elimination tournament for the PTGL Championship. Unlike other golf tours, all PTGL players will be paid to be part of their teams. Similar to other professional team sports, owners will also take care of all player travel and competition expenses.
"I am particularly proud to be involved with PTGL because of the unprecedented support it offers golfers working their way through the 'golf ranks.' The opportunity to play together on a team and build camaraderie, while being paid a consistent and reliable income is a very unique and exciting opportunity," said Tom Lehman, PTGL spokesperson and 2006 Team USA Ryder Cup captain. "PTGL extends the playing calendar with high-level competitive match play and provides a venue for touring professionals to reach their full potential."
Fans Drive the Game
Fantasy leaguers and sports fans rarely have the opportunity to truly affect the outcome of a game. PTGL will bring golf fans inside the ropes by allowing them to make crucial team decisions to determine the strategy behind team play during each event.
Golf fans can become a ProCoach by becoming a PTGL member and selecting a team at www.ptgl.com. Once the inaugural teams are finalized, fans can determine which one they want to "ProCoach." Each ProCoach will help dictate the strategy for each team prior to matches.
All fan decisions will be managed using the Strat.e.golf™ platform – an online program that helps fans analyze player and team data to make calculated ProCoach decisions. The collective consensus from each team's ProCoaches will determine strategy for a particular match, including player pairings and order of play. It will also predict each match's high-scoring player or pairing (designated as the "2X Player") whose points will be doubled. All selections will be made through Web site voting, instant messaging and mobile telecommunication devices.
Fans will have a chance to earn weekly and seasonal prizes determined by their Strat.EQ™ – an accuracy score based on a fan's pre-match decisions and their team's performance. Additionally, fans with a higher Strat.EQ will have more heavily weighted votes when making their ProCoach decisions.
"The Strat.e.golf platform gives fans the opportunity to show their true golf intellect...and earn big rewards for it," said Braun. "You don't have to be an avid golfer or even a golfer at all to be an effective ProCoach."
See How It's Played – The PTGL Showcase Event
ProCoaches will have the opportunity to see first hand how Strat.e.golf works during the league's showcase event at Rose Hall Resort and Country Club in Montego Bay, Jamaica, December 13 - 16, 2006. The Pro Team Golf League USA vs. Canada Team Match presented by the Canadian Tour will introduce the league's match play format and allow fans to test the Strat.e.golf platform.
The event will pit the top U.S. and Canadian golfers on the Canadian Tour against one another in a team match play tournament while introducing the "interactive fan" as the ProCoach.
"PTGL is creating an unprecedented relationship between the fan and athlete," said Richard Janes, Commissioner of the Canadian Tour. "This format helps to fill the gaps in the playing schedules of developing young touring professionals and opens the door to an exciting new dynamic between players and fans that has not existed in the sport before."
All online components will be active for fans to follow along with the game's action. In addition to the USA/Canada match, there will be a pro-am to introduce PTGL to business executives and celebrities with the aim of generating interest among future potential team owners.
"PTGL offers the potential to transform the very nature of professional team sports," expressed Braun.
