BOSTON -- Jimmy Fund Golf, the oldest and largest grassroots golf program for charity in the country, this season raised $5.9 million for cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through its Jimmy Fund.
“We had a record-breaking season,” said Jimmy Fund Golf Director Nancy Rowe at the Jimmy Fund Classic, the program’s year-end celebration. “The funds raised by the 25,000 golfers, volunteers, and sponsors are truly making a difference for cancer patients around the world.” The 2006 total brings the program’s 24-year contribution to more than $53 million.
Jimmy Fund Golf’s history and model are unique. The program was founded by volunteers as a way to combine their love for golf with their desire to support the fight against cancer. Each Jimmy Fund Golf tournament has the mark of those who create it, run it, and play in it. There are tournaments held in memory of loved ones lost to cancer, or in honor of those who have survived. Many of the tournaments offer golf enthusiasts the opportunity to play at exclusive and private clubs. Others are corporate events that are closed to the public. From $1,000 to more than $1 million, each Jimmy Fund Golf tournament has a different fundraising capacity, but each has the same mission, to raise money for cancer research.
Today, Jimmy Fund Golf tournaments are held in 10 states along the East Coast and as far west as Washington state. Jimmy Fund Golf gives people an outlet to use their energy and motivation to rid the world of cancer. Every year, more volunteers take the opportunity to support critical cancer research and treatment by forming their own tournaments and joining the Jimmy Fund Golf family.
