TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- SouthWood Golf Club – the award winning, upscale public course at the heart of Tallahassee’s most comprehensively designed community – today announces it has been voted Tallahassee’s “Best Golf Course” in the October issue of Tallahassee Magazine, and onsite instructor Becky Sauers has been voted the top golf instructor.
Ballots included in the magazine’s May/June issue asked readers to write-in their favorites in more than 100 categories including restaurants, shopping, recreation and entertainment. Golf courses were grouped in a single category, and SouthWood was the top vote-getter from among both public and private courses. This marks the second time the Fred Couples/Gene Bates designed facility has topped Tallahassee Magazine’s list, having also received “Best of” honors in 2004.
Sauers, who heads up the Classical School of Golf and Lady Links at SouthWood, won for the third time since opening her golf academy on property in 2002. Sauers is a former president of the LPGA’s Southeast region and was instrumental in bringing the organization’s headquarters to Daytona Beach. She was also LPGA professional of the year in 1987 and has been recognized as a GOLF Magazine Top 50 female instructor and Top 100 teachers (male and female).
“Tallahassee Magazine is a well-respected publication that reaches discerning readers and we’re honored that both the golf course and Becky have been selected again as the city’s best,” says Beth Murphy, SouthWood’s General Manager.
Adds Sauers, “This type of recognition makes what we do worthwhile. I’m grateful to have these excellent practice facilities to work with and for the support SouthWood has given me over the past five years.”
Designed by PGA Tour star Fred Couples and renowned architect Gene Bates, SouthWood Golf Club is among the region’s most-acclaimed courses. Most recently, it was named among the Top-10 courses of the new millennium by Travel + Leisure Golf. SouthWood was also named to Golf Digest’s list of “America’s Best New Courses,” selected by GOLFMagazine as one of the top 35 public courses – out of 325 nationwide – to open in 2002.
Highlighted by stands of stunning, Spanish moss-draped oak trees, the 7,172-yard layout meanders over rolling hills, through wooded areas and expansive, open land. A course that tests members of the Florida State University men’s and women’s golf teams while providing an enjoyable experience for golfers of all abilities, SouthWood features five sets of tees on every hole. The 2,986-yard “Wee Tees” provide the ideal course set-up for juniors, beginners or players seeking to improve their short game.
