Stuart Bowman new Course Manager at England's Thornbury Golf Centre

Thornbury Golf Centre's new Course Manager has had it all thrown at him since starting his new role with heavy snow and rainfall making it an interesting first few weeks.

Stuart Bowman was appointed Course Manager at the public pay-and-play facility, part of Burhill Golf & Leisure, the UK's leading golf course owner and operator, in the week leading up to Christmas, with the course completely covered in snow.

Since then Stuart has had his work cut out dealing with the thaw followed by heavy rain, throughout that time he has maintained the two courses -- the main 18-hole High Course and the 18-hole par-3 Low Course -- to the highest specifications.

"It was certainly an interesting first few weeks," said the 31-year-old, who lives in Thornbury. "With so much snow on the course, followed by the thaw we certainly had our work cut out, but the team I have here are fantastic and we all pulled together to ensure the course was not only playable but in good condition."

Stuart joins Thornbury from Burhill Golf & Leisure's flagship course Burhill Golf Club, situated in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, where he was assistant course manager. He took up greenkeeping straight from school and has a number of NVQ qualifications on the subject.

"Thornbury is my first course manager role and I'm very excited about the opportunity I have," added Stuart. "The facilities at Thornbury, the two courses, driving range and large putting green are all first class and I look forward to ensuring they stay that way."

Mel Drake, Thornbury Golf Centre General Manager, added: "It was an extremely tough time for golf when Stuart joined us with courses across the country covered in snow. But Stuart was fantastic, rolled his sleeves up and has done a great job to maintain the condition of both golf courses and putting green."
