Fouke beats heat to take Oklahoma State Senior Amateur title

Robert Fouke defeated a talented field to win the State Senior Amateur at The Territory Golf Club and residential community near Duncan.

Seeded in brackets, the top half of the tournament played out according to ranking. Fouke, the No. 4 seed from Broken Arrow, was scheduled to face the top seeded and defending senior state champion Eric Mueller in the semifinals. A back injury forced Mueller out of the competition and propelled Fouke into the final against Oklahoma City’s Bill Jackson.

The lower half of the bracket was anything but conventional as the second and third seeds fell along the way. Emerging to face each other in the semifinals were Jackson (No. 18) and Ada’s Mark Kedy (No. 11). Jackson won that match 1-up before falling in the championship.

The Territory, a 2-year-old course which is quickly earning a reputation as one of the state and region’s best championship layouts, stood up well to Oklahoma’s top seniors through four grueling days of golf.

“The course was running hard and fast,” says Territory Director of Golf Tim Johnson. “With four days of rising temperatures, golfers not only had to compete against the course and their opponents, but also themselves.”

Fouke, who qualified fourth by shooting a 1-under 71 on Monday, earned a first-round bye. He then topped Jerry Williams (Duncan), Jim Cochran (Norman) and Lynn Watkins (Ardmore) to make the semifinals.

Oklahoma Golf Association Tournament Director Mark Felder said the quality of the course and the staff’s ability to handle such a high profile tournament were determining factors in the OGA’s decision to hold the event at The Territory one year after the State Amateur was played here. The Territory also hosted an NCAA Division II Super Regional in May.

“You wouldn’t think, driving here, you’d run into anything like the Territory because the countryside is so rural and pristine,” Felder says of the course. “You come over the hill and all of the sudden you’re at this oasis.”

Located near the historic Chisholm Trail, The Territory is within a short drive of lakes for boating and fishing and mere minutes from a pair of schools, shopping, dining and churches. In addition, Duncan Regional Hospital was named to the Solucient Top 100 Hospitals list.

About The Territory

The Territory is a golf and country club community located in Southwest Oklahoma. The course, which opened in 2004, has hosted the Oklahoma State Amateur and will welcome the Oklahoma State Senior Amateur tournament this year.

With five sets of tees – ranging from 4,845 to 7,110 yards – the modified target-golf course offers playability and enjoyment to players of all ages and skill levels. The greens are an A1-A4 creeping bentgrass blend, the tees, fairways and roughs are Tifsport Bermudagrass and native vegetation frames the playing corridors.

Prospector’s Ridge, the first planned phase at The Territory, is in the early stages of development. One home is completed and now occupied and more custom homes are under construction. In addition, on 16 of the 47 lots, Tuscany style homes are being developed by Majestic Builders of Lawton, Okla. Prices of lots available range from $68,000 to $135,000. Were a similar, high-quality property like The Territory located in the nearby Dallas-Fort Worth area it would likely cost three times as much.
