PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- The summer’s premier junior Championship, the 2006 Westfield Junior PGA Championship, kicks off August 10th, with an experienced and talented field of junior golfers from across the country. The expanded field of 156 contestants consists of one boy- and girl-Champion from each of the 41 PGA Sections; winners of selected national junior tournaments conducted earlier in the year; special invitees; and past Junior PGA Championship winners, who have neither reached their 19th birthdays nor started college. Included in the field are more than 15 players ranked among the Top-50 golfers in the country, along with defending boys’ Champion Alex Volpenhein, of Edgewood, Ky.

Showcasing the boys’ side is Andrew Yun, of Tacoma, Wash., who recently won the FootJoy Boys Invitational and is currently ranked No. 15 in both the Golfweek and Junior Golf Scoreboard rankings. Furthermore, Yun, is No. 4 in the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Standings, behind Philip Francis, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Peter Uihlein, of Bradenton, Fla., and Rickie Fowler of Murrieta, Calif., who are No. 1, No. 2, and No. 3 in the standings, respectively. The Westfield Junior PGA Championship is the final qualifying event for the 2006 U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team, which will be announced on Sunday evening, Aug. 13, by U.S. Junior Ryder Cup Team Captain and Past PGA President Jack Connelly.

Joining Yun are Robert Greenleaf, of Makawao, Hawaii, the 2006 Callaway Golf PGA Junior Series Player of the Year (13-15 age division); William Kropp of Edmond, Okla.; Cory Whitsett of Houston; and John Peterson, of Ft. Worth, Texas, who are No. 33, No. 36, and No. 38 in the Golfweek ratings, respectively.

Marika Lendl, of Goshen, Conn., daughter of tennis star Ivan Lendl, headlines the girls’ side with her No. 13 Golfweek ranking and a victory in the Betsy Rawls Girls Championship. Joining Lendl are Jennifer Johnson, of Carlsbad, Calif., runner-up in the 2006 British Junior Amateur Championship, and Allie Boderman, of Palm City, Fla., the winner of the 2006 Women’s Western Junior Amateur Championship. Also participating in the field will be Cheyenne Woods, of Phoenix, the niece of Tiger Woods. She is currently ranked No. 69 by Golfweek.
This PGA of America Major Championship is bound to produce stellar golf performances, by bringing together the best junior golfers to compete for the Jack Nicklaus Trophy for the boys and the Patty Berg Trophy for the girls.

Since 2001, Westfield Group Country Club, owned by title-sponsor Westfield Insurance, has been home to the Westfield Junior PGA Championship. The site features the most Tour-like experience in junior golf for players and attendees, including covered grandstands, roped fairways, real-time scoring, leader boards, pairing sheets, player biographies, a full-service food court, and the Smucker’s Family Golf Fest mini-golf show on Saturday and Sunday, sponsored by the J.M. Smucker Company.

The Golf Channel will present a highlight show from the Westfield Junior PGA Championship on Oct. 31, 2006, from 6 p.m.-7 p.m.
