The heat and humidity this summer have been brutal. Even playing late in the evenings, by the time I walk out to find my drive on the first hole (only about 60% of the time in the fairway), I'm sweating so much it looks like I've run through a sprinkler.
So when the folks at KentWool Tour sent me a couple pairs of their golf socks - one Tour Profile pair (bootie sock) and one Tour Standard pair - I was skeptical. I mean, the last thing I wanted on my feet was something hot and potentially itchy like wool.
But the KentWool's promises were impressive: "The world's best golf sock" and "Guaranteed to keep your feet from blistering in even the most uncomfortable shoes."
So I gave them a shot.
It turns out that the fabric is 65% merino wool—air-infused merino wool at that—along with 24% nylon, 8% Cocona polyester, and 2% Spandex. Most importantly, even though they're mostly wool, I found them to not be scratchy or itchy at all.
So I laced up one of the 15 or so pairs of golf shoes I have in my trunk, trying to find a pair that I don't often wear while walking, and set off on a 9-hole round.
Although the shoes were not exactly comfortable, the KentWool socks performed as advertised: No blisters through nine holes, and quite frankly, a pretty cushy jaunt (despite my tendency to wander from one side of the fairway to the other).
I can't say for sure whether the blister-free round would have held up over 18 holes—my innate aversion to oozing sores kept me from giving it a try - but during several subsequent rounds, I can say I've yet to develop any blisters at all wearing the KentWool Tour Profiles.
And I'm looking forward to trying out the full-length Tour Standards once the god-awful heat finally abates.
