GRANITE BAY, Calif. -- With the late June opening of the new Lakes Course at PGA of Sweden National, Kyle Phillips has put his indelible design stamp on the new home of the PGA of Sweden and given this golf obsessed country one of the best golf facilities in Scandinavia. The PGA of Sweden National complex, located in Bara in southern Sweden and only 15 minutes outside Malmo, now boasts two world-class 18-hole championship courses, the Lakes and the Links, and a 9-hole regulation par-3 training course that will enable Swedish players to practice under the very best conditions and prepare for competitive tournaments around the world.
The golf development is situated on some 700 acres of former castle grounds and was strategically built to be accessible not only to Swedes but to golfers from Germany, Denmark and Norway. After seven years of planning and construction, Phillips' Links Course was christened last summer by Annika Sorenstam. This year's opening of the Lakes Course was highlighted by a 3-hole exhibition by current World Top 50 player Peter Hanson and former European Tour winner Ove Sellberg. Both courses were crafted to ensure their complete harmony with the natural surroundings of the countryside and Phillips' sensitive environmental considerations are evidenced throughout all 45 holes.
The parkland Lakes Course measures 7,415 yards from the back tees and is a par 72. The design evokes traditional architecture from the early 20th century and small greens with tightly mown chipping areas, large and formidable bunkers and water hazards define the character of the Lakes. The three fierce finishing holes are a demanding test of strategy and nerves. An impressive lake comes into play on the 17th and guards the entire left side of the 18th hole. "With the addition of the majestic Lakes Course and 9-hole Academy Course to the traditional Links Course, the PGA of Sweden National has clearly positioned itself at the top level in Scandinavia and on par with any of the quality golf resort facilities in the world," says Phillips.
One of Europe's most advanced teaching facilities can be found at PGA of Sweden National. There are six target greens, eight bunkers, covered hitting areas and two indoor teaching studios with the latest swing analysis and custom club fitting technology. Only five other locations in Europe have such sophisticated equipment.
