Corey Konieczki victorious at Midwest Junior Players Championship

MUNDELEIN, Ill. -- Kaira Martin of Paradise Valley, Ariz., fired a 1-under-par 71 to claim a repeat victory in the Girls Division at the Midwest Junior Players Championship. Corey Konieczki of Rockford, Ill., made up a one-shot deficit to win the Boys Division by two strokes at Pine Meadow Golf Club.

The Midwest Junior Players Championship was a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Pine Meadow Golf Club. The tournament field featured 57 boys and 21 girls, ages 12-18, from 16 states, Canada, Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia. The Boys Division played the par-72 course at 7,131 yards while the Girls Division played at 6,198 yards.

Martin, who won by five strokes, shot a 2-over-par 218 to capture the title two years in a row. Playing solid golf all week, Martin said consistency keep her in contention.

"I played really consistent," Martin said. "I played my own game this week. I hit most of my shots well and my chipping and putting really saved me."

In her final year with the AJGA, Martin was glad to wrap up the summer with another win.

"It feels good to keep my title," Martin said. "I won't be able to do it next year so I wanted to end on a good note."

In second place was Kathy Sterling of Mokena, Ill., with a score of 7-over-par 223. In third was Han Wu of La Mirada, Calif., with an 8-over-par 224.

Konieczki, who held a one-shot lead in the first round of the Boys Division, fired a 2-under-par 70 for a two-shot victory. Finishing with a 5-under-par 211, Konieczki said he started the final round a little slow, but got relaxed and turned his game around.

"On the back I tried to calm down and start swinging easy," Konieczki said. "I started hitting fairways and hitting greens."

Crediting his iron play for his six birdies on the day, Konieczki said he was able to get it close to the pin and give himself good opportunities.

"My irons helped me the most," Konieczki said. "Towards the end I was hitting pins and making close, easy putts."

Finishing with his first-ever AJGA win, Konieczki said the victory was rewarding.

"The win feels great," Konieczki said. "There are a lot of great players here and it made me feel like I'm one of the top players along with these guys."

In second was KK Limbhasut of Loma Linda, Calif., with a 3-under-par 213. In third was Ben-Marvin Egel of Kokomo, Ind., carding a 2-under-par 214. Finishing fourth was Blake Biddle of St. Charles, Ill., with a 1-over-par 217. In a tie for fifth was Kyle Weldon of Des Peres, Mo., Jordan Wetsch of St. Charles, Ill., and Tommy Schofield of Mundelein, Ill., with a score of 2-over-par 218.
