VAIL INTERNATIONAL DANCE FESTIVAL BUILDS ON LEGACY OF DANCE EXCELLENCE
Since 1989, the Vail International Dance Festival has featured some of the greatest dance artists from around the world in seasoned classics, contemporary masterpieces and world premieres. First introduced as an intensive dance workshop presented by the Bolshoi Ballet, the Festival has evolved into one of the world's most treasured and eagerly anticipated summer dance events. The 2006 Festival, July 30 through August 13, will open with a bang on July 30 as legendary opera star Jessye Norman joins forces with choreographer Trey McIntyre for an unforgettable evening entitled The Diva, The Duke and The Dance, featuring the music of Duke Ellington in song and dance, along with the world premiere of McIntyre’s Go Out. The 2006 Festival also features principle dancers from the world’s most prestigious dance companies in the International Evenings of Dance, three contemporary companies performing on one evening in Different Dimensions, the National Ballet of China and an evening of world-champions in Ballroom’s Best. Local arts & crafts vendors show off their wares while food vendors tickle the palate with crepes, roasted almonds, fudge, lemonade, coffee drinks, burritos, brats and much more. Live entertainment features three Jazz bands at the Market weekly with guest appearances by classical and popular groups, giving the market a festival-feel that draws crowds for hours. RUBBER DUCKS, START YOUR ENGINES
The annual Rubber Duck Race to benefit the Rotary Club will be held in Vail Village. Vail's Gore Creek will once again become a sea of bright yellow, as thousands of rubber ducks compete for charity and the entertainment of the enormous crowd in attendance. Rotarians will sell sponsorships and “duck adoption papers” during the weeks prior to the race. On race day, about 10,000 yellow rubber ducks will be dumped into Gore Creek near the Covered Bridge and “race” down to the river to the finish line underneath the International Bridge. Prizes will be given to those holding the adoption papers for the winning racers. The Rubber Duck Race has become a hugely popular event and a Vail summer tradition that raises over $50,000 for the Rotary Club.
