HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- Tolver Dozier of Dothan, Ala., shot a 1-under-par 70 and a three day total of even-par 213 to get into a playoff. On the third playoff hole, he made a five-foot putt for birdie to earn the win. Emma Talley of Princeton, Ky., shot a women's record 6-under-par 65 to win in the Girls Division.
The AJGA Huntsville Junior presented by The Huntsville Athletic Club was a 54-hole stroke-play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at The Ledges. The field featured 70 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 17 states. The Boys Division played the par-71 course at 7,044 yards while the Girls Division played it at 6,029 yards.
Dozier birdied Nos. 16 and 17 and then chipped in for birdie on No. 18 to finish with an even-par 213 three round total. After Dozier chipped in, Tyler Thomas of Beaumont, Texas, made a 30-foot putt on 18 for birdie to match Dozier's score and send the championship into a playoff.
On the third playoff hole Dozier used a hybrid wood to stick it less than 10 feet from the hole. He made the birdie putt and in just his third AJGA event, Dozier earned his first win.
"It was a wild tournament and I'll never forget it," Dozier said. "I wish it could have been on TV. I got lucky hitting those hybrids so close in the playoff. It's just a shame that someone had to lose."
Thomas finished in second with a three-round total of even-par 213. In third was John Boehme of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., who shot a three day total 1-over-par 214. Finishing in fourth with a three-round total of 2-over-par 215 was A.J. Crouch of Jacksonville, Fla. Rounding out the top five was John Russo of Alpharetta, Ga., who shot a three-round total of 3-over-par 216.
Talley, a two-time Rolex Junior All-American, earned her sixth career AJGA win shooting a three-round total of 15-under-par 198. The three-round total is the lowest 54-hole total for a girl in the AJGA's 33 year history. Talley also broke the record for largest margin of victory, winning by 22-strokes, breaking the old record of an 18 shot margin.
"I was hitting the ball really well," Talley said. "I was hitting the ball to six feet or closer on my approach shots and I don't know how I hit those so close. I haven't played good lately and to come back like this the week before the U.S. Junior means a lot to me."
Janie Jackson of Huntsville, Ala., finished in second place with a three day total of 7-over-par 220. Rounding out the top three in the Girls Division was Hannah Collier of Birmingham Ala., who shot a three-round total of 10-over-par 223.
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and 30 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.
Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.
AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 400 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Charles Howell III, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Stewart Cink, Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Morgan Pressel.
