The Loon Golf Resort is a course that wades a bit under the radar in northern Michigan. I've been around Gaylord many times, and I've never even personally played it - and I'm not really sure why.
That's just the way it goes in the land of hundreds of courses that range from really good to excellent. I've already played scores, and may never see them all.
But the Loon is adding some national name recognition that might help grow it's reputation a bit. Swing coach Butch Harmon has just signed on to bring a golf school to the resort. Harmon will also come personally on July 30th-August 1st to the course to host a Pro-Am event. Phil Mickelson's current swing coach, Harmon will now have a presence in the land of Rick Smith, Mickelson's former swing coach, who is an owner of the Treetops Resort in Gaylord and hosts a golf school there.
Will that be awkward?
Here's some nuts and bolts about the Pro-Am event later this month from the press release:
This exciting event will be a fun filled weekend of golfing, clinics, and great food, together with meeting the games #1 instructor. The format of the event is a two-day 36-hole pro-am played in a four-person team format with Amateurs competing in both gross and net divisions. Butch Harmon will also be on hand participating with private clinics for the contestants, as well as playing holes, and interacting with each group.
The cost to participate in the pro-am event is $2,000 per four-man team. This includes practice rounds on Friday, tournament rounds, Clinics with Butch Harmon, cocktails, meals, as well as awards and prizes. In addition, the first 20 teams to register will receive lodging at the Loon Golf Resort.
I'll be headed to northern Michigan later this summer, but not coinciding this event. I'll be headed to the Harbor Shores grand opening on August 10th, where Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Johnny Miller and Tom Watson will be on hand.
Ah well, maybe next time I'll get to finally visit The Loon Golf Club.
