Mike Bailey: Top-100 instructor Charlie King is on the campaign trail, kissing babies and helping golfers

Charlie King is on a mission to help you enjoy golf more. It's all part of his campaign to change the rules of golf instruction. That's why he's running for the President of Golf Instruction.

No kidding. King, the director of instruction at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, Ga., is on the campaign trail. OK, it's pretty much figurative, but King, a top 100 golf instructor, has been sending out YouTube videos of golf lessons, clinics and speeches on why he thinks traditional golf instruction hasn't worked, and he's been relentless. He believes in what he does.

Earlier this year, I got a lesson from King. I've had lessons from a lot of guys, but in just a few minutes, during an uncomplicated short session, King helped me with my short game and full swing. There was no confusion, no get worse before you get better, just an instant understanding of what I needed to do.

You see, King doesn't believe in swing models or overhauling swings; he believes in golf skills. Master those skills, and you can play golf.

Anyway, he's got videos and an e-book and a real book called "Golf's Red Zone Challenge."

And if you don't believe him, ask one of his students, comedian Steve Harvey, who endorses King for President of Golf Instruction. There's also a video of Harvey's new improved swing.

This week, King's campaign is focusing on impact and some drills that will help you achieve what he says is the most satisfying feeling in golf -- solid contact.

It's not as if he's trying to get everyone to sign up for golf lessons with him; he's got plenty of students. He just wants you to demand certain things from your instructor such as "I want you to get me to hit it solid," he says. "People who hit it solid don't quit golf."

King is climbing the polls. About 40 percent of the unique visitors to his CharlieKingforPresident.com site are signing up for regular e-mails. That's pretty good. You, too, can check out Charlie's videos. Just click here.
