Chris Baldwin: Dan Quayle walks out on John Mellencamp for Republican bashing at celebrity golf tourney

In the continuing attempt to make sure the celebrities playing golf in the American Century Championship get their every appetite sated, free VIP tickets to a special tournament set up John Mellencamp concert at Harvey's Lake Tahoe were provided. Ex Vice President Dan Quayle, perhaps feeling a hankering for some tunes after a long day on the course, showed.

Then, all political hell broke loose.

In mid show Friday night, Mellencamp introduced a song with "This next one is for all the poor people who've been ignored by the current administration," according to witnesses.

Quayle almost immediately marched towards the exit from his high profile seat at the outdoor venue.

"I didn't appreciate the comment and besides I didn't think the show was very good," Quayle told an observer as he bolted.

Who said celebrity golf was all hugs, kisses and Jerry Rice dances?

Quayle is about the last one of the celebrity golfers you would have pegged to march away from someone in a huff. He gave an interview to TravelGolf.com a few hours before the concert in which he deflected every political question with a virtual no comment and threatened to come across as the most boring Republican of all time.

Of course, that was before Mellencamp went after a Bush.
