PEARL RIVER, N.Y. -- The two newest releases from Classics of Golf, the leading publisher of fine golf books, based in Pearl River, are being warmly received in the golf community. Both books are firsts of their kind: TILLINGHAST: CREATOR OF GOLF COURSES is the first full biography of an American golf course architect, and THE UNITED STATES AMATEUR: THE HISTORY AND PERSONAL RECOLLECTIONS OF ITS CHAMPIONS is the first comprehensive history of the tournament.
TILLINGHAST: CREATOR OF GOLF COURSES, BY PHILIP YOUNG
Dr. Michael Hurdzan, the prominent golf architect, historian and collector, writes, "Tillinghast is entertainingly written and presented, with many photos, illustrations and reproductions of Tillinghast's advertisements for his firm. The book itself has an elegant look, from its classic typefaces to the gold stamping and portrait of the young Tillinghast on the cover. Its virtues taken together, Tillinghast may become recognized as the definitive work on A.W.T. The book is worth the cost and the time it takes to read, and should go on the top shelf of your library."
The book also has been praised by….
architect Geoffrey S. Cornish ("an immense contribution to my profession and art form")
noted British publisher and collector Bob Grant ("It brings the master fully to life. [Readers] will marvel at the real man—his ambitions, his ideals and his struggles"
Tillinghast Association co-founder Rick Wolffe ("This book is pure treasure")
Golf Digest featured the book last month as the lead item in "Good Reads," saying author Young "gives [Tillinghast] a thorough—and loving—look in this bio."

THE UNITED STATES AMATEUR, AS TOLD TO COLIN SHEEHAN
This 3-volume set brings to fruition one of the most ambitious sports publishing projects ever—to present the complete history of this grueling tournament, dating to 1895, and to tell the stories of all 46 living U.S. Amateur Champions in their own words.
The set features a Foreword by former USGA President Fred Ridley (1975 U.S. Amateur Champion) and an Afterword by former PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman (1960 and 1963 U.S. Amateur Champion).
Ridley writes in his Foreword:
Seen through the eyes of all 46 living Amateur champions, [the book] is the only comprehensive account of the tournament ever written. Its stories place the reader inside the minds of some of the game’s most celebrated competitors and describe what it takes to become a national champion.
Here are some of the comments the book has received from the champions themselves:
Bill Campbell (1964): "Classics of Golf should be proud of THE UNITED STATES
AMATEUr, which needed doing. It is a real service to golf"
John Fought (1977): "This is a work to be admired. Thanks for your passion and
attention to detail"
Mitch Voges (1991): Thanks for the thoughtful and insightful stories of the U.S.
Amateur champions. There is a common theme and bond that
most have experienced, and you captured it.
Bob Dickson (1967): "I'm very impressed with it. It is very well done"
Jeff Quinney (2000): "Thanks for all the hard work. Great collection of stories."
Justin Leonard (1992): "Thanks for keeping these memories alive."
Craig Stadler (1973): "What a wonderful collection. I am honored to be a part of
it."
AND ONE OF THE WORLD’S LEADING AUTHORITIES ON AMATEUR GOLF WRITES:
GORDON G. SIMMONDS
AUTHOR OF "THE WALKER CUP:
GOLF’S FINEST CONTEST, 1922-2003
Just finished 'devouring' the magnificent chronology of The U.S. Amateur. You and all of the collaborators should be proud of a job very well done. The personal recollections idea works very well. I particularly enjoyed learning about the myriad of personal details, such as mind-set prior to and during the relevant championship and their development path getting there. It was also interesting to find out more about their personal circumstances and how they first got into golf. So many began as multi-sport athletes. [Nick] Flanagan was gracious about the help he had had from the Belmont GC junior program and membership, which was a thoughtful acknowledgement too often overlooked once a certain stage is reached in a tournament golfer's career.
The books will provide me with a treasure trove of reference for many years to come.
