BASF returns as title sponsor for People vs. the Pros tournament

BASF Professional Turf & Ornamentals will sponsor People vs. the Pros for the third year, giving 25 superintendents across the country the chance to play against Retief Goosen or Gary McCord at Pinehurst Resort on Aug. 22 for a $50,000 charity prize. Superintendents will also have the chance to compete against one another for $15,000 cash and $10,000 in BASF products in the third-annual BASF Superintendents’ Cup tournament.

BASF will host 20 official People vs. the Pros regional qualifying tournaments for superintendents. Each regional tournament champion wins an all-expense-paid trip to compete in the field of 200 amateur golfers at the national BASF People vs. the Pros championship tournament at Pinehurst, Aug. 18 – 22, 2006.

More than 1,000 superintendents will vie for a position in the Pinehurst final through the regional BASF events, held in conjunction with Golf Course Superintendent Association of America (GCSAA) chapters. Additionally, at every regional tournament, BASF will donate $2,000 to the hosting GCSAA chapter’s education fund.

“Providing a national forum to recognize the professional dedication of golf course superintendents is an honor,” said Dr. Toni Bucci, business manager for BASF Professional Turf & Ornamentals. “We’re proud to be a part of sharing the superintendent story.”

In addition to the two final pro-am matches, BASF will host the third-annual BASF Superintendents’ Cup tournament, where the top two superintendents from the three-day Pinehurst tournament who do not qualify to compete against a pro will compete in head-to-head match play for a $10,000 cash prize and $10,000 in BASF products for their home course. The runner-up will receive a $5,000 cash prize. Highlights of the match will air on ESPN2.
