Hershey Golf Collection hosts three championships in two years

HERSHEY, Pa. -- The Hershey Golf Collection completed its role as host of the 2010 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Men's Golf Championship last week, marking the end of the first of three national championship events coming to the Pennsylvania town between now and September 2012.

The four-day Division III NCAA championship was contested May 11-14 in partnership with nearby Elizabethtown College. The first two rounds were played over both the East Course at Hershey Country Club and the Hershey Links course. Hershey Links was the site of the final two rounds. Methodist University held off Guilford College by one shot to win its 10th national title, while Claremont Mudd Scripps' Tain Lee went wire-to-wire to secure individual honors at 8-under 280.

Next year, both the East and West courses at Hershey Country Club will play host to the 44th Professional Golf Association (PGA) Professional National Championship, the showcase event for PGA Professionals, which will be conducted June 26-29, 2011. Established in 1968, The PGA Professional National Championship roster of Champions includes past and present Tour professionals Sam Snead, Bob Rosburg, Don Massengale, Ed Dougherty, Larry Gilbert and Bruce Fleisher.

In 2012, the third 18-hole gem of the Hershey Golf Collection, the West Course at Hershey Country Club, will serve as the site for the 2012 United States Golf Association (USGA) Senior Women's Amateur Championship, the national championship for female amateurs age 50 and older. This championship will be played September 8-13, 2012.

"It is truly an honor to be chosen as the host site for these three national championships," said Ned Graff, director of golf for the Hershey Golf Collection. "These tournaments provide exciting opportunities for us to showcase the rich tradition of championship golf in Hershey, which was home to the PGA Championship in 1940, the Lady Keystone Open from 1978 until 1994, and the Reese's Cup Championship from 1997 through 2004."

Known for impeccably maintained greens and the natural beauty of its rolling fairways, Hershey's golf offerings are steeped with rich history on every hole. In 1930, chocolate magnate Milton S. Hershey founded Hershey Country Club, eventually giving the first floor of his home, High Point, to serve as the clubhouse. Since then sporting excellence has been the key, attracting legendary golf icons - including Ben Hogan and Henry Picard, each of whom served as head golf professional at the Country Club - as well as players of all levels.

Hershey Golf Collection, a division of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, comprises 63 holes of golf across four courses - East Course and West Course at Hershey Country Club; Hershey Links; and Spring Creek G.C., a nine-hole course that's ideal for junior players and beginners.
