Golframes, an on-line store for old course plans and recreations of golf course architectural plans and art, has announced the availability of a limited edition print featuring the "Proposed Links at Pebble Beach, California." The print was hand drawn by Forrest Richardson based on his interpretation of early depictions, writings and a personal interview with Jack Neville, the man who laid out the original plans for Pebble Beach with Douglas Grant.
"My conversation with Mr. Neville will always be among my most cherished memories," says Richardson. "He was gracious, humble and was so happy to share his stories of the early days creating Pebble Beach." Among the information that Richardson took away was the "less-is-more" approach that Neville and Grant sought to bring to the building of the course. "He told me that it was the most beautiful site he had ever laid eyes on, and that their biggest fear was screwing it up," adds Richardson. Besides the use of large, sprawling "dunes" bunkers, Neville commented about the design and how it was always intended to evolve.
Evolve it has. Today, the Pebble Beach Golf Links has undergone significant changes to lengthen, strengthen and otherwise improve the course. In contrast to the limited edition print showing the links as it was originally conceived and built, the modern-day Pebble Beach can be stretched to more than 7,000 yards, a far cry longer than the 6,320 yards shown on the recreated map. The historical nature of the print is intensified by the reproduction detail to resemble a old fashioned blueprint. The line work of the print is reminiscent of early drafting and architectural plans.
The limited edition prints are available from Golframes at http://www.golframes.com/ under the heading: Pebble Beach. Two sizes are available, 17x9 inches and 30x16 inches. The smaller, executive size, prints come framed in a Canadian Walnut frame style, or as unframed archive prints. The edition is limited to 400 (200 for the larger size.) Each print is numbered and signed by Forrest Richardson.
Golframes has become recognized as a leader in specialized golf prints, especially prints and art focusing on golf courses and golf architecture. Among their other limited edition prints are reproductions of an original plan of Oakmont Country Club, a plan of Cypress Point Club and A detailed rendering of The Old Course at St. Andrews labeled with individual bunkers and features.
