Mater Dei High School's boys golf team defeats St. John Bosco

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- Mater Dei High School's Boys Varsity Golf Team, ranked number #2 in Orange County, announced that the team captured a remarkable win and an important league victory against St. John Bosco and established a new scoring record at Willowick Golf Course.

"This group of young golfers is really coming together. This past Monday they won the Estancia Golf Tournament and on Wednesday they broke the previous team's record by three strokes," said Ollie Martin, Mater Dei Varsity Golf Coach.

The Mater Dei Boy's Varsity Golf team shot their 167 to 199 against St. John Bosco for the win. The victory sets a new Mater Dei scoring record at Willowick Golf Course where the regulation length course sets a par of 71. However, both teams only competed on the front nine holes.

Brian Campbell led the Monarchs with an amazing eagle and two birdies to shoot a four under par 31. This stellar performance was closely followed by Camden Price and Michael Haeri who both shot two under par while teammates Braden Cluck and Joey Caucas leveled the field with pars to assure the team's victory and new record.

The Mater Dei Varsity Golf Team is coached by All Star, Hall of Famer, and Golf Coach of the Year, Ollie Martin. Prior to joining Mater Dei, he coached varsity girl's basketball at Ocean View High School for ten years and was an assistant at Vanguard University for two. During his tenure, Martin was named the Orange County Coach of the Year as well as the 1995 Orange County All-Star Coach.

In 1996 he was inducted into the Chapman University Hall of Fame. In 2007, Martin was named the Girl's Golf Coach of the Year by the Orange County Register.
