SANTA ANA, Calif. -- Mater Dei High School's Boys Varsity Golf Team, ranked number #2 in Orange County, played in its second golf tournament of the season and captured its second team victory for the 2010 boys golf season.
The Monarchs entered into the Estancia Golf Tournament this past Monday, March 29th with a four man team that included Brian Campbell, Camden Price, Michael Haeri and Braden Cluck. The abbreviated squad played the Mesa Verde Country Club in a Stableford scoring format.
"This system was new to the team but they really enjoyed it. They encouraged each other in every shot. Early in the match, they had a string of birdies and they were elated," said Ollie Martin, Mater Dei Varsity Golf Coach. "This really brought out the spirit of team."
Mater Dei's team posted 10 birdies in addition to a multitude of pars for a total of 70, a very impressive score. Pars are awarded 1 point, birdies 2 points, and eagles 5 points. A very talented Northwood team took second place with a total of 66.
"The 18-hole format does benefit our team as most of our golfers play competitive golf on the SCPGA, AJGA or others," said Ollie Martin, Mater Dei Varsity Golf Coach. "And, the Co-Captain Brian Campbell again set an impressive pace which inspired them. He personally brought 24 points to the total."
The Mater Dei Varsity Golf Team is coached by All Star, Hall of Famer, and Golf Coach of the Year, Ollie Martin. Prior to joining Mater Dei, he coached varsity girl's basketball at Ocean View High School for ten years and was an assistant at Vanguard University for two. During his tenure, Martin was named the Orange County Coach of the Year as well as the 1995 Orange County All-Star Coach. In 1996 he was inducted into the Chapman University Hall of Fame. In 2007, Martin was named the Girl's Golf Coach of the Year by the Orange County Register.
