Mater Dei High School boys varsity golf team captures victory

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- Mater Dei High School and its Boy's Varsity Golf Team, ranked number #4 in Orange County, clinched both the A and B divisions at the Diamondback Tournament in Apple Valley, CA.

Coach Martin divided the Varsity squad into two teams, one for the A division and a second for the B division. His decision proved to be constructive. The A team was led by Brian Campbell who shot a 4-under par 68, followed by Camden Price who shot 1-over at 73, followed by Braden Cluck at a 2-over 74, and Michael Haeri who rounded the team out at a 76 to collect a first place finish.

The B team was equally impressive as the A team. Joey Caucas shot a 3-over par for a 75, followed up by Nico Mendoza whose 76 inspired Matt Cwalina to shoot a 77 and Grant Rapoza's 84 kept the squad in contention to capture the B division.

"I am very proud of this group of golfers. They have fun and work hard on and off the course, their scores prove it. More importantly, they are working together as a team, said Ollie Martin, Mater Dei Varsity Golf Coach. "And, a special shout out to Brian Campbell whose amazing 68 took the individual portion of the tournament!"

The Mater Dei Varsity Golf Team is coached by All Star, Hall of Famer, and Golf Coach of the Year, Ollie Martin. Prior to joining Mater Dei, he coached varsity girl's basketball at Ocean View High School for ten years and was an assistant at Vanguard University for two. During his tenure, Martin was named the Orange County Coach of the Year as well as the 1995 Orange County All-Star Coach. In 1996 he was inducted into the Chapman University Hall of Fame. In 2007, Martin was named the Girl's Golf Coach of the Year by the Orange County Register.
