Mater Dei High School starts season by setting new scoring record

SANTA ANA, Calif. -- Mater Dei High School and its Boy's Varsity Golf Team, ranked number #4 in Orange County, started the season with an impressive victory over Sage Hill High School but more importantly set a school record at Santa Ana Country Club.

The Mater Dei Boy's Varsity Golf team shot their 184 to 235 against Sage Hill. The victory set a new Mater Dei scoring record at Santa Ana Country Club, one of the county's oldest and premier golf clubs in the Orange County area.

Brian Campbell and Michael Haeri set some serious numbers, posting 1-under par 35 to earn co-medalist honors. Braden Cluck, Camden Price, and Nico Mendoza all posted rounds of 38 to help the team set the record and inspire team confidence.

"This is going to be a great golf season. This year's squad is deep. We have veteran players who can shoot some uncanny numbers and the rest of the squad can keep up with them on any day," said Ollie Martin, Mater Dei Varsity Golf Coach.

In addition to setting records, the talented Monarch golf squad last week defeated Orange Lutheran at Willowick Golf Course and Woodbridge at Santa Ana Country Club.

The Mater Dei Varsity Golf Team is coached by All Star, Hall of Famer, and Golf Coach of the Year, Ollie Martin. Prior to joining Mater Dei, he coached varsity girl's basketball at Ocean View High School for ten years and was an assistant at Vanguard University for two. During his tenure, Martin was named the Orange County Coach of the Year as well as the 1995 Orange County All-Star Coach. In 1996 he was inducted into the Chapman University Hall of Fame. In 2007, Martin was named the Girl's Golf Coach of the Year by the Orange County Register.
