The field of the 2009 Southeast Junior included players from eight states when it was held over the weekend before Thanksgiving. A cool Central North Carolina fall weekend had players searching for knit hats and hand warmers. The organizers of the 2010 event, The Tarheel Golf Foundation, aim to swap windshirts for sunscreen and to make it easier for players and families to travel to the tournament. The Duke University campus has two hotels located within yards of the golf course and the weekend of July 3-4 will provide more hours of daylight for players to utilize the courses outstanding practice facilities and enjoy the attractions located on the Duke Campus and Durham, NC.
"The Duke University Golf Course consistently ranks among the top college courses in the country. It has hosted two NCAA Championships, ACC Championships, numerous men's and women's intercollegiate tournaments, USGA and Carolina Golf Association tournaments and is a favorite among junior golfers," stated Eric Murray, a Director of the Tarheel Golf Foundation, "In the past we have had some of the top ranked juniors in the country play in this event, we hope that even more will play over this summer weekend."
The Robert Trent Jones course, later modified by Rees Jones, is a classic design with modern challenges. The course is one of the better walking courses in North Carolina, which allows for a better pace of play since most tees and greens are close together. As home to both the men's and women's Duke Blue Devil's Golf Teams, the Duke University Golf Course offers one of the best locations in the country for a major junior championship. North Carolina is currently ranked third strongest for junior golf competition and player strength by Junior Golf Scoreboard. That high ranking along with a similarly high ranking in neighboring South Carolina should provide a highly competitive field before top players from other states even enter the event.
The Duke University Golf Course and campus are conveniently accessible off Interstate 40 in Durham, NC. Major airlines provide daily flights to Raleigh Durham International Airport which is only 20 minutes away. The Washington Duke Inn is located at the golf course and other local accommodations are just minutes away.
