A video out there making viral rounds is Golf Channel's Alex Miceli, going off on the timing of Tiger Woods' non-press conference at TPC Sawgrass tomorrow morning.

I'm impressed with Miceli's cajones. Few beat writers who are at the tour week in, week out ever really go after Tiger Woods with such venom and it's generating a tremendous amount of dialogue. I've called out Tiger before, but I usually don't cover events, I'm busy reporting on the high stakes world of golf travel...It's easy to rip on Tiger when you don't need weekly and exclusive access to him.

It does strike me as a little unfair to jump to conclusions that the timing of his statement comes in the heat of the WGC Accenture Match Play Championships and that he's wrongly controlling the press. First off, I don't see what other choice Tim Finchem has other than to grant Woods his wish to a clubhouse and controlled environment. The Q & A session is inevitable, but it doesn't have to happen during his first public statement, no matter how salivated we all are to chew into Woods' personal life at this point.

Woods' agent says the timing of the Friday announcement is absolutely necessary. As blogger Stephanie Wei points out, it better be "necessary" because he's announcing at the deadline he'll play in the Waste Management Phoenix Open next week. It is annoying that Woods will disrupt the coverage of the Accenture Match Play (not to mention the Mayakoba Classic down in Mexico) with his announcement, but lets hear what he has to say first.

If he's coming out on Friday to announce he'll play at the Tavistock Cup or doesn't really reveal anything timely or newsworthy other than a "whoops, my bad", we can all light the torches at that point.
